Pickleball Rules for Beginners: The Complete 2026 Guide

Pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in the world, and the good news is the rules are simple. Here's everything a beginner needs to start playing in minutes.
The court and the serve
A pickleball court is the same size as a doubles badminton court — 20 ft by 44 ft, with a net at 34 inches in the middle. The serve must be made underhand, with contact below the waist, hit diagonally cross-court into the opponent's service box. The serve must clear the non-volley zone (the "kitchen").
The two-bounce rule
This is the rule that makes pickleball unique. After the serve, the ball must bounce once on each side before players are allowed to volley (hit it out of the air). So the returning team lets the serve bounce, and the serving team lets the return bounce. Learn it in depth in our two-bounce rule guide.
The kitchen (non-volley zone)
The 7-foot zone on each side of the net is the non-volley zone. You cannot volley while standing in it (or touching its line). You can step in to play a ball that has bounced. More on this in kitchen rules made simple.
Scoring basics
Traditional pickleball uses side-out scoring — only the serving side can score, and games go to 11, win by 2. We break down side-out vs the newer rally scoring in pickleball scoring explained.
Common faults
- Hitting the ball out of bounds or into the net
- Volleying from inside the kitchen
- Failing to let the ball bounce under the two-bounce rule
- Serving overhand or above the waist
