Pickleball Scoring Explained: Side-Out vs Rally Scoring (2026)

Traditional side-out scoring

For most of pickleball's history, games use side-out scoring:

• Only the serving team can score a point.
• Games go to 11, win by 2 (tournaments may use 15 or 21).
• In doubles, both players on a team serve before the serve passes to the opponents — except the very first service turn of the game.

Calling the score

In doubles you call three numbers: your score, the opponents' score, and the server number (1 or 2). For example, "4–2–1" means your team has 4, the opponents have 2, and you're the first server.

Rally scoring (the 2026 shift)

Rally scoring awards a point on every rally, regardless of who served — like volleyball or badminton. USA Pickleball provisionally recognised rally scoring in 2025, and it is becoming more standard in 2026 formats (often used to keep matches fast and broadcast-friendly), though side-out remains the traditional default in many rec and tournament settings.

Rally scoring makes games quicker and easier to follow — one of the reasons leagues and broadcasts favour it.
