Ask any coach for the most valuable shot in pickleball and most will say the third-shot drop. Here's why — and how to hit it.

Why the third shot matters

Because of the two-bounce rule, the serving team is stuck back at the baseline while the returners are already moving to the net. The serving team needs a way to safely advance — and that's the third-shot drop.

What it is

A soft, arcing shot that drops gently into the opponent's kitchen, landing low so they can't attack it. While the ball floats, the serving team moves up to the kitchen line, neutralising the disadvantage.

The technique

1. Get low with bent knees.
2. Use a gentle, lifting stroke — push, don't swing.
3. Aim for an apex on your side of the net so the ball is descending as it crosses.
4. Target the kitchen, not the baseline.
